Where we started
The class average on our BOY maths check was 73%. 34 of 40 students scored above 60%.
What it told us: a strong base, with six students who needed more support.
"Culture is sort of like the oxygen of the classroom."
Home of the Twelve. Class 5B's culture plan for 2026: gratitude and teamwork, the Kalam way.

The class average on our BOY maths check was 73%. 34 of 40 students scored above 60%.
What it told us: a strong base, with six students who needed more support.
22 of 40 students sat it, and their average was 58%. 16 were absent that day.
What it told us: with so many away, we read this result with care.
17 students sat the levelled worksheet. Word problems were the hardest level: 12 of the 17 scored below 35%.
What it told us: a bigger denominator was often read as a bigger fraction, and "like fractions" were added without rewriting them first.
All 40 students sat it. The papers showed where the marks went.
What it told us: some students add in every word problem, even "spent from a total" ones, and blank rough-work boxes lose method marks.
Our middle-of-year goal is a class average of 17.4 / 20, with every student at 13 / 20 or more. By the end of the year: 19.1 / 20.
What we reteach: comparing fractions, "total minus parts", and showing our working.
The Maths Dashboard holds each sheet and what we learnt from it.
Open the Maths Dashboard →Rows were the habit. Most faces looked at the back of a head, and anyone in the back row could quietly disappear.
So we moved the desks.
Every face is visible during Read Alouds. Opposite corners can see each other, and the empty middle is floor space for charades and group work.
Honest note: chairs still drift back to rows. A five-second glance-check before each lesson puts them back.
See the seating plan →Drawn by hand, not photographed. We practise these every day.

Seated in your own spot.
Finger on lips, voices off.
Arms folded, inside your own space.
Helping a friend, sharing kindness.
We will all score at least 70% on our Learning Assessments.
We will be able to show up for others.
We will be able to work as a team in 90% of our projects.
100% of the class will take part in at least 10 competitions a year.
Class averages from our beginning-of-year (BOY) maths sheets. Some are strong. One is not there yet, and we are saying so.

Class average, BOY to our goal for 31 October 2026. Fractions is where we are reteaching first.
Each one tests different content, so read them side by side, not as a trend.
